Re-imaging the Women Veterans Memorial in Eden Park, Cincinnati Ohio

Placed by the Dames in Eden Park forty+ years ago is a small foot marker plaque honoring women veterans. The plaque reads:
In recognition of the women of the armed forces who have volunteered their services that Freedom might live. It is weathered, hard to see, and isolated from the nearby and much larger Vietnam Veterans Memorial with its male soldiers. The condition of the plaque and the discrepancy of size undermine the honoring of women veterans.

In this same community space for contemplation, we envision a sculpture that recognizes women veterans throughout our history and is commensurate in size with the Vietnam Veterans Memorial.

Suggested wording for the new memorial would be: Women have exhibited unwavering dedication in service to our nation in times of peace and war. Their service defends our freedom, advances equality and inspires future generations.

Criteria
We are inviting artists to submit their CV, artist statement and work samples. A prototype is not required for submission but sketches are encouraged. From the submissions, up to 5 artists will advance to review from the City of Cincinnati Board of Park Commissioners.

"[The NSCDA-Ohio] are taking on a project to honor women veterans, and they believe it is the first such program in this country," a June 10, 1985, article states. It continues, citing a Mrs. Vaughan Montgomery, " 'What we are doing is an absolutely new concept as far as all the research I have done. It occurred to me that women veterans never had been honored...' "

Carolyn Koenig is the local museum properties chair for the National Society of the Colonial Dames of America in the State of Ohio. She tells WVXU, "My understanding is at that point in time the Dames wanted to really honor our female veterans, and they had done their homework and done their research, and they couldn't find anything else like it in the country, so they really wanted to be the first to do something like that."

She says the organization is interested in the idea of refreshing or reinventing the memorial.

NSCDA-OH attend Naturalization Ceremony

Ohio participates each year by attending naturalization ceremonies and sponsoring and handing out small American flags to the new citizens. Look for details about the next ceremony we will attend on our calendar and via Constant Contact.

Ladies with patriot

In 1919 the National Society launched an initiative to encourage immigrants to pursue American citizenship and to assist them in that endeavor. Ohio participates each year by attending naturalization ceremonies and sponsoring and handing out small American flags to the new citizens.
